TITLE: A Strange Twist of Fate
Severus Snape stumbled into the lovely entrance area to Hogwarts in awe. The lavish decorum gave the big hall a distinguished look. 'Definitely allows one to know this place is a place for learning,' he decided. These halls and ghosts intimidated him. Could he have mistakenly ended up in the wrong place? Did Hogwarts really want him? Why? His parent didn't even want him. Severus' father cared more about the Black Arts, worried more about his advancements in He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named's ranks and what new benefits he received from the local township officials. An eleven-year-old Severus didn't fall into his mother's plans either. She busied herself with alcohol, calming potions, and bedding with her husband. She made it painfully obvious she hadn't wanted children. So what if she had the option? Despite all this, Severus still acted for the good of others. He enjoyed seeing the smile on people's faces and the knowledge that he'd given some one happiness. His father, and mother never gave him those looks. Never expected him to amount to much unless he joined the Death Eaters. That, though, wasn't Severus. To his parents, Severus could be considered nothing more than a squib. So, needless to say, Severus viewed Hogwarts as uncharted territory and possibly great fun. As he followed some unnamed prefects into the dining hall and then to the stage, he felt all those Hogwarts students pick him apart. The Sorting Hat did its song and then demanded the first student. Young Severus watched anxiously as those lovely tables filled with students respectively. Five minutes after the first new student took his place beneath the Sorting Hat, it was his turn. Severus' nervous fidget increased so much so that the Sorting Hat had to sooth him, "Now young man, there's no need for worry. You would do well with any of these groups. Your father was a Slytherin. Your mother as well. I think magnificent things would come from you if you were to join the ranks of Slytherin as well. They are smart and cunning. They prefer to do things their own way and this seems to be good for you. You can be great if you want to be. You should decide to be so." With that, a dazed boy mutely hopped off the stool he'd been sitting on and snuck over to the Slytherin table. What were these people like? Did they have plans to be Death Eaters like his father? If so, did the Sorting Hat bungle in thinking that he'd wanted the same thing for himself? He'd recalled most Slytherins ended up being on the side of evil. He didn't want that for himself. He immediately feared for the worst. Only time, though, would tell him what he needed to know. He hated that whole concept, but it definitely repeated loudly, stubbornly, and unabashedly violent. He sighed as he sat next to a boy who eyed him intently. "Hello," greeted the boy, "My name is Lucius Malfoy. I am the Slytherin prefect and I hope that we can get to know each other." Severus smiled and returned the greeting. At least it seemed to be working for the better . . . ------- TITLE: A Strange Twist of Fate 2/? ----------------- After two years, Severus and Lucius sped toward a friendship that grew into more. Each boy discovered what he needed in the other. Severus found the love, tenderness, and understanding that he'd received so little of as a child while Lucius found the intensity, intelligence, nurturing he felt was necessary in his life. No one seemed to know exactly what kept the two together, especially when they fought more than any healthy relationship would warrant. Lucius made no attempts to squash his jealous side. In fact, he allowed himself to be even worse. There were many evenings where Lucius would accuse him of being unfaithful. Severus could never understand why his lover always accused him of dishonesty. It was made clear to several of those interested that he wouldn't stray from Lucius. They'd known each other for four years. Dated for two of those years and this was all Severus had to show for it. A jealous and overbearing lover whose fears he could never allay. "I think, if we are to even stand a chance at maintaining any kind of relationship, the romance has got to end," Severus faced his lover, "I'm quite close to having nothing more to do with you in any capacity and I would hate for that to happen." Lucius simply stared at him, growing more and more irate over the situation. "I take it you've found some one to take my place, eh? You've found some one beside me to take care of you, huh? Who is it? Or are you frightened of telling me?" Severus groaned. His hopes of maintaining some kind of friendship seemed hopeless. "You oaf, I told you that I wasn't unfaithful. I cannot stand anymore of these awful accusations. I have dealt with them in stride. I allowed you to treat me in some less than nice ways when you went into your moods," his voice slowly gained volume as he'd said those words. This young man was far from the Severus that Lucius knew. "Look, perhaps we should wait until later to discuss whether or not this relationship could be kept alive," Lucius puzzled over his now ex-lover's actions. The vehemence and anger so openly displayed threw him off keel. Severus turned on his heels and left his cloak billowing in his wake. Lucius knew he messed up this time. He'd gone too far and he could only kick himself. He knew, also, that he stood no chance of winning the lovely young man back. After an hour of wandering aimlessly, Severus sat down in front of the Gryffindor dormitory. He didn't really know how he got there and he didn't really care. All he cared about was his bleeding heart. He'd really ended things this time and doubted there would be any way to get Lucius back. Not that he was sure that he wanted to be back with him. Afterall, Lucius treated him so awful that he knew he shouldn't want him back. He guessed it had something to do with his fear of being alone. "I'll get along somehow," agreed Severus. "Get along with what?" A simple question, but it was this question that caused Severus to jump and think twice about why he was outside the dorms for his supposed enemies. "It's nothing," Severus saw no need to give him any kind of help on the information. "Did you finally breakup with that jerk Lucius? I was hoping you would. He didn't treat you like the wizard you are. That was so wrong that many people wouldn't understand how wrong it is." "Potter, why is this any of your business?" Severus decided flowery words weren't going to be used. He didn't want to mince words. "Oh, it's not really my business, but some one who is quite interested in you would be quite ecstatic." James' comment caught the other boy off guard. "Unless they'd be in Gryffindor, I doubt that you'd truly know." It wasn't exactly showing interest but wasn't showing a total lack either. "Would you like for me to tell you?" Suspicions rose immediately. "If you're playing some kind of joke Potter, you'll regret it. I'm in a foul mood and do not wish to be teased." James merely smiled. "Well, how about I whisper it to you then," James Potter smiled and then whispered, "I'm the one that's interested in you." "Excuse me?" James left one Severus Snape speechless. The only response, though, was a kiss on the cheek. Then, "I've been hoping for two years the you and Lucius would break up. He knew it too. That's why he was so jealous about you. It was quite obvious," the smile was back again. "Seems like you knew I've been holding feelings for you too." Severus speculated due to the nature of the other boy's admission. "I'd hoped it was more obvious than it was, evidently," James suddenly seemed nervous, "I wanted you to know. I really needed you to know. I didn't know how much longer I could wait, either." "What do we do then?" Severus hoped severely that they'd give the relationship a try. "If you'd want me, I'd like to try a relationship. What d'ya say?" Now his smile returned except dimples topped off the whole look and left Severus unable to resist. "I'd definitely like to try." Severus then kissed
James tenderly on the cheek.
