*~*~*~*~*

Of course it was impossible to keep anything secret in Hogwarts for very long. Especially when the secret involved the teaching staff. It wasn't like there was a great attempt to hide the fact that there was a secret. Dumbledore flitted about like a drunk bumblebee, a silly little grin plastered to his face. Hauling the entire Potions classroom and Snape's private quarters up to the groundfloor. Madame Pomfrey bossing Snape around, making him eat, warning him off flying on his broom, and dragging him into the hospital wing on a weekly basis for heaven knows what.

And Snape! He was the most suspicious of them all!

The black-haired man was acting so weird. First his eating habits changed. He now ate almost all his meals in the Great Hall, and classes would see an empty plate setting on one of the work tables when they came to class. He had started to walk slower, taking his time in navigating the countless stairs. Buying that little dog and taking it everywhere with him. And the way that Pomfrey and Dumbledore were fussing over him was positively nauseating, most especially to Professor Snape himself if one judged by the expression he wore each time one of the two approached him.

Every student, regardless of their house, grew more and more curious as days passed. All except for four very worried Slytherins.

Draco kept his promise about not telling anyone. As if anyone was would believe him anyways. Who in their right minds would believe that the most hated man in the entire school with the possible exception of Filch was pregnant. The mere thought of Snape being a parent was mind-boggling.

With this being a secret about Snape, naturally Harry, Ron, and Hermione were at the top of the list of curious Gryffindors.

"Weird huh?" Ron commented as they watched the Headmaster spoon another serving of carrots onto the scowling Potions Master's plate.

"Yeah," Harry agreed. "You think he's sick?"

"Who? Snape?" his friend snorted. "Otherwise than mentally?"

Hermione shook her head. "No Ron, I think Harry might have something. It's obvious that the Headmaster and Madame Pomfrey are concerned about his health."

"Maybe he's caught something, like the Goblin Flu." Lavendur giggled.

"Can't be that," Seamus sniggered. "He'd be covered in green warts if he was."

"Oh Man! I'd give an entire year's allowance to see that!" Dean Thomas piped in.

"A year's allowance? I'd give that and all the chocolate frogs stashed in my closet to have a camera along when I saw it!" Creevey laughed.

Neville couldn't help laughing at the image his housemate's words conjured up. He himself might give up his own hoard of Honeyducks candy for the sight of Professor Snape covered in green warts.

Down the table Fred and George Weasley were whispering in each others ears, casting calculating glaces towards the staff table. Trouble was definitely brewing there.

" I tell you he's up to something!" Ron said as the three friends walked to their next class. "That slimy git is up to something!"

"What could he possibly be up to Ron?" Hermione asked.

"Well he could be trying to find a way to get Harry, or maybe he's drugged Dumbledore."

"Nonsense," she scoffed. "I think Harry's right, he's sick."

"Of course he's sick 'Mione! We're talking about Snape here! The man's a Death Eater for Merlin's sake! They're all a bunch of twisted, sadistic, wack--OW!"

Harry tried not to giggle as Hermione slapped Ron up the back side of his head.

"The Headmaster seems happy looking after Snape." Harry pointed out. "Maybe it's just a temporary thing. That's why he's not being serious about it."

"Okay, I'll admit you have something there, but remember who we're talking about here. This is Snape. Not McGonagall, Remus, or Hagrid. Snape, as in the greasy, overbearing, make-every-student's-life-hell Professor Snape. What's there not to like about him getting a little misery back?"

"Really you two!" Hermione stepped between her friends as they glared at each other. "There's only one way to find out what's going on."

Ron just blinked at her, but Harry was a little quicker. "My cloak."

"Yeah!" A bright smile broke out on the youngest male Weasley's freckled face. "Tonight?"

"Tonight." Harry agreed.

Remus Lupin strode down the halls, headed for the new Potions classroom.

He looked even worse for wear than ususal. The palour of his skin almost chalk white. A nervousness hung about him, one very different than what he experienced when the full moon was near.

His last trip to Hogsmeade had gained him more than just a few supplies for class. He'd unintentially solved a puzzle that had been haunting him for some time.

Severus' scent.

He knew now what was different about the other man's scent.

Lily had smelt exactly the same way when she'd been carrying Harry. Just like that woman in Honeyduckes last Saturday. The woman had been around eight months pregnant.

If Severus smelled like Lily and that unnamed woman didn't that mean he was pregnant too?

Remus just had to know.

Severus sat aside the finished potions from the last class and began checking what he would need to retrieve from the storeroom for the next after lunch.

"Hhmmm, almost out of young toad tongues." He jotted down on a conveient pad. "And I'd best fetch some more appleroot, Longbottom's guaranteed to botch this one up."

At his feet Electra agreed, she'd never have believed someone so clumsy and skittish was allowed into the school if she hadn't seen it with her own eyes.

Snape rose, rubbing one hand over his back as he made is way to the new storeroom. He'd discovered a lovely new ailment to go along with his pregnancy; back aches. The growth of the twins was throwing off his center of balance and he was compensating by leaning back. This action started the abused muscles to take up protesting, something which this perticular potion was only agrivating.

Unfortunately when the elves moved his lab they didn't quite get everything back into the order he had it in before. Somehow during the hours it took him to rearrange the bottles he'd missed the back up stock of toad's tongue. The damm thing was up on the top shelf.

Grumbling he grabbed a step ladder...

" Severus?" Remus called as he entered the classroom. "Sev, you here?"

He was about to leave when a familair voice floated to him from the storeroom. Yes, here he was, up on a step ladder!??! What was he doing? He could get hurt!!

Lupin's fears were realized just then when Snape gasped, one hand flying to his stomach. He lost his balance and fell backwards.

There was a moment of blind panic and then Remus found himself moving faster than he ever had in his entire life. No time for wand work, by the time he got out his wand Severus would've hit the stone floor and seriously hurt himself and his child.

Snape's arms flailed about, frantically grabbing for anything to stop his fall, before he slammed into something which was definitely not the cold floor.

Stone didn't go 'Oof!' when you hit it. Long arms wrapped about him as his mysterious savior staggered back. It was several seconds before Severus' nerves and racing heart had calmed enough so he could open his eyes. He wanted to see the face of the one who'd saved him.

Damn. Lupin.

Remus was propped against the wall, clutching Severus to him, eyes closed, breathing heavily.

Lupin was nearly overwhelmed! Snape's scent swamping his sense of smell. The strong steady beating of not two but THREE hearts filling his ears. He couldn't move, his wolf instincts screaming at him to protect the pack, to protect the young. It was all he could do not to run out the room with it's dangerous potions and take Snape back to his quarters where he'd be safe.

"Lupin," Snape called to the other man. "Lupin, Remus, let me down."

Remus blinked, regaining a little more control of himself, using Snape's voice as an anchor.

"Remus, put me down." Severus' tone was pleading. "Please Remus."

Lupin slowly lowered Snape's legs but kept hold on the other man till he was steady on his feet.

"Remus." Snape called again, waiting till Remus's brown eyes were fixed on his to speak again. "Thank you." He whispered, and wonders of wonders, hugged the werewolf!! Too stunned by this strange event Remus automatically returned the embrace.

"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE!!??"

Sirius padded through the school's grand halls, sniffing the air, following his friend's scent. Remus had been acting really funny for a while, ever since they'd come back from Hogsmeade. He seemed stunned, and kept shooting strange glances over at that git Snape every time they were in the same room together.

The animagi was sure that miserable snake had done something to his friend to make him act so. And he was determined to find out whatever it was, just as soon as he made sure Moony was fine. His sensitive nose picked up the werewolf's scent and he sped up his pace. A shiver went through his fur when he saw that Remus's scent led right into the dammed snake's lair.

He trotted in, following the sound of voices. Sirius turned the corner into the storage room just in time to see Remus and Snape wrapped around each other!

Before he could think about what he was doing Sirius returned to his human shape and bellowed at the top of his lungs. "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE!!??"

The two men, startled by the sudden scream, sprang apart, both looking around frantically for the source of the enraged voice. Remus sighed in resignation when he saw Black's form framed by the doorway, shaking with barely contained fury. That fury erupted into motion.

Snape gasped as Black's hand clamped onto his neck and squeezed, slamming him into the wall, lifting till his toes barely touched the floor.

Electra charged, teeth barred to defend her master. But the angry man lashed out with one foot, kicking the young puppy into the wall where she lay stunned.

"What do you think you're doing Snape??!!" Sirius snarled. "Keep your filthy perverted hands off Remus or I swear--"

"Sirius let him down! Let him down now!!" Remus was screaming, trying to dislodge his friend's hand from the other man's neck.

"No! Not till he promises to leave you alone. Well, maybe not then either.." Sirius grinned maliciously and tightened his grip on the struggling Potions Master's neck, laughing as his hated enemy began to turn blue.

Remus stepped back and pulled out his wand. "Sorry Padfoot." He whispered before casting his spell.

"Petrificus Totalis!"

Black's eyes widened in astonishment as his whole body froze. Lupin then used his wand to pry away the tightly gripped fingers about Snape's neck. The werewolf held the shaking, gasping man close, slowly guiding him over to the nearest chair. He knelt down, supporting Severus, fingers checking over the other's throat. There were bruises already forming.

"Finite Incantatem." He said, dispelling the illusion Snape wore. His instincts flared anew at the sight of that ripe belly. A simple muttered spell reassured the werewolf that the twins were fine. Behind him Black was watching the whole scene with ever widening eyes.

As before his mind jumped to all the wrong conclusions.

"Re..mus." Severus coughed, his throat sore from it's sudden abuse. Lupin retrieved the water glass from Snape's desk and held it steady as the other man gratefully took a few sips.

"That's it, take it easy now Sev." He coached softly.

Lupin always did have such a wonderful voice.

"Remus, the door...close.." Severus managed to get his meaning across. A student or teacher could appear at any moment and see the wanted murderer Sirius Black immobilized over by the wall. Lupin quickly shut the door and locked it, placing a sound-proofing spell around the room for good measure. It was a sure bet Sirius would go ballistic the moment the spell was lifted. Remus wasn't disappointed.

The second he felt the invisible bindings release Sirius was launching himself at the still sitting Snape.

Severus lept from his chair even as Remus grabbed his friend, holding the raving man back from the vulnerable Potions Master.

"YOU BASTARD!!" Sirius shrieked at the top of his lungs. "YOU STINKING PIECE OF SLIME!! What did you do to Remus!! How'd you get him into your bed you WHORE!! Is that monstrosity you're carrying EVEN HIS to begin with??!!!"

Severus stumbled back away from the two struggling man. The sheer hate flowing off Black was like fire on his nerves. "It's not--"

"NOT TRUE??" Black lunged forwards, battling against Lupin's restraining grip. "What's not true? That you've somehow seduced my best friend?? That you've convinced him whatever that is growing inside you is his??"

"Dammit Padfoot! Listen to me--"

But Sirius was beyond listening. He broke free from Remus and shifted into the big black dog. He raced up the steps, knocked the door's lock free and ran out into the corridor.

"Dammit Siri, why couldn't you have just listened." Remus sighed before turning his attention back to Snape.

"He's going to Harry most likely."

Snape moaned, though not from pain. "And from Harry' friends it will spread to the whole school. Floo Dumbledore Remus."

None of the children currently lounging about in the Gryffindor common room thought anything about it as Sirius' dog form come barreling in through the entrance, barreling up the stairs to where Harry's dorm was. Professor Lupin's pet was often in Harry's company, sometimes spending all night by his bedside.

The three friends all jumped as the large canine ran in and nosed the door closed behind it. One look at those wide eyes, heavy panting, and raised fur and Harry knew something bad had happened. He whipped out his wand and sealed the door, setting up a sound-proofing spell for good measure.

"It's safe." He told his Godfather.

Immediately Sirius was standing before them whiter than a sheet, breathing raggedily, and shaking from head to toe.

"Sirius! What's wrong? What's happened??"

"What's wrong? What's happened? I'LL TELL YOU WHAT'S HAPPENED! REMUS HAS GONE INSANE!" Black bellowed.

"WHAT!!!" Harry's yell blended with Ron and Hermione's.

"HE'S BEEN SHAGGING THAT BLOODY WANKER!" He began pacing furiously. "AND NOW HE'S UP THE SPOUT!! THAT MOULDY, DISGUSTING PIECE OF--"

"Wait a minute! Wait a minute!! Who is Professor Lupin shagging? Who is it that's pregnant?" Hermione grabbed Black's arm to look strait into his eyes.

"SNAPE! SNAPE!" He spat the name out as if it were the foulest word in the whole world.

It took a second to register in their minds exactly what he'd said.

Ron and Harry both thought they were going to be sick, their skin taking on a distinct shade of green.

Hermione however wasn't so affected. To her it didn't really matter what the two adults did, if they loved each other then it was okay with her. What really intrigued her was the fact that one of them, a man, was pregnant. What spell or potion had brought that about? Had it been done before? Were they any books to read on it? This called for a trip to the library. But that would have to wait till later. Right now she had three very upset boys to calm down.

" ..and you say he believes you are the father Remus?" Dumbledore asked as he watched Poppy check Severus over.

"Yes Albus. He ran out before I could try to explain."

As soon as the aged Headmaster saw Snape he flooed Pomfrey, practically dragging the poor woman over to where Severus sat cradling Electra to his chest. Albus now paced a slow steady circuit in front of the desk as he listened to Lupin's tale.

"This is dreadful business." He stopped, fingers rubbing the bridge of his nose. "Sirius will no doubt have went strait to Harry, from where the information will spread quickly."

"You really don't think Harry would tell--"

"I do not think Harry would speak of this to anyone, but unfortunately his friends are another matter. Their conversations have been overheard before. It is only a matter of time, you know very well Remus that once a secret is out it spreads like a wildfire through the entire student body."

"Yes," the werewolf remembered what it had been like shortly after Severus had revealed Lupin's secret to the students. "What will you do about this Albus?"

"Tonight, yes tonight I'll make an announcement during the evening meal. I will make it very plain to all what is going on. There will be no room for any speculation afterwards."

Pomfrey wrapped a warmed blanket around her patient before reporting her findings to the Headmaster. "I'd like to take Severus to the hospital wing Headmaster."

Worry crept into his voice. "Was he hurt? Were the twins?"

"The babies are fine. But Professor Snape is suffering from a light concussion, bruised throat, and shock. He needs healing and a warm, quiet place to rest where he's safe." She then turned her eyes to the young pup Severus held. "And I'll have to see to that dog of his. I think Black's kick at the very least bruised her ribs, possibly broke one or two. That was a hard blow for so young an animal to take."

"She was trying to defend Severus." Remus petting Electra's head, gaining for his effort a tiny flick of her tongue against his palm.

"Remus, go with Poppy, help her with Severus. I must go and see to Black." And while the old wizard's words were gentle the hard glint in his blue eyes didn't bode well from Sirius. Remus at that minute was eternally grateful that he wasn't in his friend's shoes right now.

The news did indeed spread fast. Ron's outburst right in the middle of the common room about Snape's condition set off a chain reaction of events. Several Gryffindors told their friends, who spread it to their friends in Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff where it then spread to Slytherin via several easedropping spells.

It didn't take long to filter to the staff.

The entire school was abuzz with the news. Professor Snape and Professor Lupin were shagging and the dreaded Potions Master was knocked up.

In the Slytherin house three girls flew into a fit of hysterics at the news, babbling about how he was going to kill them now that the news was out.

Between the three they spilled the whole story when pressured by their fellow housemembers. And while they approved of the girls attempt to oust Granger and Dumbledore, they fully disapproved of their failure to tell Snape of his condition. The man was the head of their house, a fellow Slytherin, and one of the Dark Lord's servants, and as such deserved respect. Where was he going to find that respect now? It was sure bet the other houses and most if not all of the faculity would be laughing at him.

Draco, for his part, kept calm. With a group of other level headed housemembers they devised a plan to oversee Snape and assist him whenever they could.

There was nothing that could be done to stop the pregnancy now so they might as well support him. It would be better for the girls in the long run.

Sirius looked around the rooms he shared with Remus, black nose held high. There wasn't any of Snape's loathesome scent in here so that must mean his friend went down to the potions labs for their little trists.

His hackles rose at the thought, stomach turning flipflops as his brain supplied the imagery to go with the thought.

What on earth had possessed Remus? He thought his friend had better taste than that! What could he possibly see in Snape was beyond him. The man was nothing but a stinking bastard with all the allure of a piece of five-day old roadkill in the middle of july.

The hall door swung open and closed. Sirius trotted into the main room, intent on shaking his friend to his senses if necessary. Limbs froze in midstride as his eyes came to rest on a very stern looking Professor Dumbledore. Never had Black seen such anger and dissappointment in his wise blue eyes.

"Ah, there you are Sirius. I do believe we need to have a little talk.."

Severus sighed as he snuggled down into the soft matress. The room was dimly lit, but not so dark that he couldn't identify anything within. A light blanket was drapped over him, gently tucked about his limp body. He remembered Poppy giving him a warm cup of tea heavily sweetened with honey and urging him to drink it. Afterwards this wonderful state had descended on him. For once Severus didn't fight it.

Besides him, curled up in a ball of fur, Electra lay warm and cozy. Black had indeed managed to break one of the loyal hound's ribs which a simple healing spell mended. Poppy herself laid the dog down by her master.

Half-lidded black orbs looked up into Remus's soft brown eyes. Eyes filled with compassion, with friendship. Yes, Lupin was indeed him friend. Remus wouldn't let anyone hurt him, hurt his children or his dear Electra. Satisfied they were truly safe Severus drifted off into a deep sleep.

Remus closed the door till just a fraction of an inch still remained open, he could hear better if Severus needed anything.

"That ought to hold him till morning I think, he's a bit run down." Poppy said as she gestured for Remus to join her at her table. The school's nurse rarely ate in the great hall. She preferred to be close to her patients in case anything unforeseen occured. The house elves had already delivered the covered dishes and the smell was heavenly. Before he tucked into his food Lupin wondered how Dumbledore's little talk with Sirius went. He hoped that Padfoot was all right

For Sirius Black things were not all right. Never had he ever beeen dressed down like that. Dumbledore had been furious. The old man told him strait off the bat that all of his assumptions were wrong. That Snape's condition had been due to a mistake in one of his classes. There was nothing going on between Remus and Severus except a growing friendship. That HE, not Remus or anyone else, was the father of the children Severus carried.

The Headmaster would no longer tolerate any attacks on Severus, whether they be verbal, physical, or magical. No more pranks, no more attempts to isolate the man from the students, Remus, or the other staff members. There would be grave reprecussions for him if he failed to uphold his word this time. Very grave indeed.

Then there was Remus to consider. How was he going to apologize to him?

Growling, the animagi dipped the brush down into the bucket besides him, swirling it about in the soapy water. Lifting the stiff brush out he set about the task the Headmaster set him to.

Cleaning the stables where some of the creatures for Hagrid's class were housed.

No magic, and no certainly no anti-smelling charms.

Just good ole human muscle, soap, and water.

Life sucked.

That evening the great hall was hardly quiet this night. Far from it. The air was practically solid with the amount of rumors floating around about the owners of the two vacant chairs at the faculty table, and they weren't just confined to the student's tables either.

"I heard he's been cursed," one Ravenclaw girl told her friend. "And he's no longer really a man."

"No, no. It was a potion, like they use for gay couples to conceive." Was the one running over at Hufflepuff's table.

"Snape? Gay? EEWWW!"

"Well that ruined my appetite, maybe for life."

Students seated in Gryffindor were running several ideas.

"Do you think he was born that way, you know, to have kids?" Seamus asked.

"Naw, I bet he's really ticked someone's folks off and this is their revenge." Albert, a first year chuckled wickedly. "I remember what mom went through with my baby sister. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy if you asked me."

"Does this mean they'll be more Snapes?" Ginny asked Hermione. Before she could answer Ron groaned and started hitting his head on the table.

"That's right!" The red-head looked sick again. "More Snapes, and he or she will probably be just like him, a miserable bastard."

Harry was strangely silent. He too was thinking about Snape and his impending parenthood, only his thoughts kept returning to the question of where Sirius was? He hoped the animagi was all right, Sirius was the only real family he had left.

"Your attention please."

A hush fell on the hall as the Headmaster stood. "Now I know that all of you by now must have heard something about Professor Snape. Yes, the rumor is true; Severus is indeed pregnant. BUT REMUS LUPIN IS NOT THE FATHER."

He waited for a moment to allow the whispers to die down. "We believe that Professor Snape is the victim of some student's ill-aimed trick in potions class."

Here he saw several Slytherin girls and Draco squirm on their seats nervously. Perhaps it would be beneficial to speak to those youngsters later. "For the record Professor Snape is not gay, the children he carries were conceived completely by magic. As to who the real father is that is quite simple; I am."

Here Professor McGonagall spit out her drink and started coughing, Flitwick and Vector slapping her on the back.

Trelawney just gave that knowing little smirk of hers and continued eating.

Sprout was going on about how wonderful it would be to have babies among the staff to teach again. Hagrid was almost bouncing with excitement.

Sinistra mumbled something about more rats in the hole and setting some traps in a less than a benevolent tone.

The remaining staff didn't seem to care one way or another.

Amongst the students there were mixed reactions as well. When it was revealed that the Headmaster himself was the father of Snape's unborn children there was a collective sigh of relief.

With a great man like Albus Dumbledore as a parent how could these children go bad?

Of course you did have to take into account that the man was as crazy as a loon half the time.

Others were quite sick. The words 'Snape' and 'parenthood' simply did not go together in many students books. It was bad enough that he had to teach them, what were they supposed to do now that he was breeding, filling the world with more horrible tossers like himself.

"Well, maybe this is better than Remus. I mean, Dumbledore won't let him hurt them." Ron smiled.

"Right Harry?"

" I guess you're right Ron but still, I have to wonder why Snape's going along with this."

*~*~*~*~*

The morning after Dumbledore's announcement began as it usually did. Students rising and getting ready for another day of learning, attending breakfast before setting off for their first class of the day.

The faculty seeing to their own meals, checking over the studies they planned for each year's class.

Breakfast was certainly loud today, the whole school was still in an uproar about yesterday's revelations.

Most accepted the Headmaster's announcement of the facts, but a few still held out there was more to the Potion Master's pregnancy than they were being told.

Of course Ron Weasley had to be one of these holdouts.

"It just doesn't make sense, that's all I'm saying 'Mione." the red-head said to his friends. "I just can't see Snape as capable of being all..all.."

"Maternal?" Hermione supplied.

"Yeah! Maternal. What would a oudious snot like him know about caring for babies? Why would he want them in the first place? He's made it perfectly clear over the years he hates children."

"All right, I admit that you do have a point," grugingly agreed Hermione. "Professor Snape certainly hasn't been the model of a caring parent. But maybe he will be with his own flesh and blood."

"Maybe, maybe not. I'd still like to know what he's planning though."

Harry remained silent. He himself had some doubts about Snape's intentions. The man had been nothing but cruel and overbearing to his students over the years, most especially to Harry himself. But at that same time he'd come to Harry's rescue, saving the boy he swore he hated from death time and time again. Severus Snape was a man of many contridictions.

Perhaps it was time Harry tried to sort them out.

Because of Sirius blurting the truth of Snape's condition to them and later Dumbledore revelation at dinner the trio had forgotten their earlier plans to spy by way of Harry's invisiblity cloak.

"Why don't we find out," he said to his friends.

"Tonight, we'll see what Snape's really up to."

"Yes! Now that's more like it." Ron whooped.

Snape walked down the corridor towards the Great Hall, the ever present Electra by his side. It was his hope that by being late for breakfast he might avoid the scrutiny by staff and students alike. With his secret out Severus had no doubt that things were only going to get more complicated now. It wouldn't be just Albus and Poppy hounding him about every little thing, there'd be others, and not just among the staff.

That thought made him grimace.

The situation was bad enough without the threat of students attempting to coddle their teacher looming over his head.

Electra sniffed and explored as they went. She never tired of examining her home, everything here changed so much the Corgi was sure she could spend her whole life here without ever cataloging all it's scents and secrets. Looking over at her master the dog reassured herself that he was all right before resuming her exploration.

She was just sniffing the toe of one old suit of armor when one of the most delicious odors she'd ever smelt wafted to her. Black nose twitching she inhaled again. Ah! Heavenly! Such a rich aroma! Electra swung her head about, determined to find the source of that mouth-watering smell.

THERE!!

Mrs. Norris, Filch's cat, came around the corner, waving her tail lazily about.

A hungry light crept into her amber eyes as Electra leapt forwards, mind singing with joy.

( Cat! CAT!! Yummy, yummy, yummy!!)

Despite her lack of magical bloodlines Mrs. Norris was an intelligent cat, one that knew the value of instinct and when to listen to it. And right now her instincts were screaming at her to turn tail and run the oppposite direction with all possible haste!

The old cat gave a wheezing hiss, fur bristling, tail resembling a bottle brush, and bolted back down the hall she'd just come up. Electra was on her tail in an instant, baying like a foxhound on the hunt.

"Electra!!" Snape yelled. "STOP!!" The two animals dissappeared around the corner.

There was a bloodcurdling yowl and the sound of falling armor.

After a second Electra came trotting back to him, looking a bit miffed but still quite pleased. The cat might've got away this time but she'd left a little memento behind. Stopping before her master, Electra plopped down on her furry rump and began eating her prize, chewing with relish the sweet meat.

Snape couldn't believe his eyes.

Surely that wasn't what he thought it was...

It couldn't possibly be what it looked like....

Peering closer Severus sighed. Yes, it was indeed exactly what it looked like.

Electra had torn off about six inches off that mangy old cat's tail and was now in the process of devouring it. Another bite and it was done, the only remaining evidence was a bit of blood and fur stuck to the Corgi's muzzle.

"Electra, why did you do that?" He asked, not knowing why since she couldn't talk.

Amber eyes looked up at him. (( Cat....good...yummy..))

He blinked. What in Merlin's name was that?

Wait a minute. Didn't the woman at the shop say that these dogs were slightly telepathic? And the book did speak of them learing to mindspeak only with their masters. Yes! This must be that bond beginning to form.

"Electra did you just say that cats are...yummy?"

The dog rolled her eyes in exasperation. (( Cat..yummy!!))

"Oh for--Well, I'd best warn Minerva then. Can't let her become some kind of walking doggie treat....though the idea has some merit." He chuckled but disposed of that thought. Albus wouldn't like hearing about one of his faculty being eaten by a cat-craving dog.

Perhaps he should go now. Albus would be in his office by now, checking the load of mail that landed on his desk every day. A simple levitation spell would see him up the stairs.

( I simply can't wait to see his face when I tell him.)

So went the duo. Man and puppy, making their way up the many ever-changing stairs.

Right at that moment the Headmaster was indeed in his office, but he wasn't alone. Four very nervous, very concerned students were setting before his desk.

"Perhaps it would be best if we cut right to the heart of the matter," said Dumbledore calmly. "I believe that the four of you know all the facts behind Professor Snape's condition. Your current position would be much better if you talk willingly."

"What will you do to us?"

"That Ms. Parkinson will not be my decision. Since Professor Snape is the injured party I believe he has the right to choose your punishment."

Here the youngest girl, Millie Devine, burst into tears.

"We're doomed! Doomed I tell you!" She sobbed, fat tears rolling down her face.

Dumbledore offered her a handkerchief which she gratefully accepted. However he wasn't about to take it back after she blew her nose in the bit of cloth several times.

"Does that mean we'll be expelled Sir?" Morgana asked.

"I think Severus can be persuaded not to take things that far Ms. Dunwich. However, whatever punishment he deems fitting may well make you wish you had been expelled."

"Yes Sir." The seventh year slumped back in her seat.

She was glad the Headmaster was speaking so honestly about this, lying about their chances would only hurt in the long run.

"Mr. Malfoy I must express my disapointment in your part in this whole affair. I would have thought you at least would put the health of the head of your house first. There are any number of complications which could have injured and even killed Severus before we knew what was happening. By keeping the pregnancy a secret you endangered Professor Snape's life."

Draco kept his head lowered, eyes fixed on his clenched hands. It did hurt to think about that.

Professor Snape was the one person he looked up to.

Not even his own parents could lay claim to a fraction of the trust and respect, and maybe even love, the blonde felt for Snape. To know that his decision might have put Snape in danger....

As if summoned by their thoughts Snape himself came into the Headmaster's office.

"Ah Severus!" The Headmaster quickly rose, coming around the desk to escort the younger man to a chair.

"Did you climb all those stairs up to here? Poppy will be furious, you really shouldn't exert yourself so!!"

"Really Headmaster, what sort of idiot do you take me for. I levitated up." Snape snarled, attempting to break free of the old man's guidance, all to no avail.

Dumbledore refused to back down, leaving only when he was satisfied that Severus was comfortable. Black eyes drifted off the Headmaster to the huddled girls and the despondant Draco.

"And what are my students doing in your office Headmaster? Surely they are innocent in whatever mischief's being blamed on them."

Like the flick of a wand Dumbledore's light blue eyes lost their amused twinkle. "Unfortunately Severus they have already admitted they were the perpertrators."

Snape grumbled under his breath. "And what have they done?"

"Ms. Parkinson, Ms. Devine, and Ms. Dunwich are the ones responsible for your pregnancy. Mr Malfoy discovered this but kept the information to himself."

Here was the moment that the children had dreaded.

Snape finding out.Their only measure of solice lay in the fact that Professor Snape was finding out about this here in the Headmaster's office and so should refrain from attempting to kill them outright.

Dire thoughts did indeed spring into the Potion Master's head.

Oh, what he could do to these children! The jobs he could foist off onto them. Foul brews for Sprout and Pomfrey. That nasty concoction for Hagrid's little pets he didn't want anyone to know about. Those thoughts must have translated to his face for all four students cringed back from that menacing visage.

However tempting those were Snape couldn't find himself to remain angry with them for long.

"Before this goes further I wish to hear the whole story, and I do mean 'whole'."

"Y-yes Sir." Ms. Parkinson started, the other three jumping in to add a point when Pansy slipped over it.

As Pansy had predicted Dumbledore was not at all pleased when he heard who their intended target was.

The Headmaster did indeed hold the Gryffindor house in high regards, and Potter and his friends even higher.

An attack on Hermione Granger was sure to anger the aged wizard immensely.

He was about to say something when Severus lifted up a restraining hand.

"I believe I've heard enough."

The four steeled themselves. This was it. As Millie had foretold, this was doomsday.

"Whatever ill will you bear for Ms. Granger is irrelevant. However, the facts that you didn't anticipate accidents and their consequences and failed to inform me of the possiblity of this pregnancy is very relevant. Fifty points from Slytherin for each of you, everyone must write a 20 page essay on my pregnancy which I expect on my desk completed by Wendsay, and all four of you will be serving detentions with Filch for the next two month. Are you finished with them Headmaster?"

Albus was for the moment too shocked to move. Who was this setting in his chair? What was he and what had he done with the real Potions Master?

"Headmaster?" Snape's voice

"Yes, yes. You may go."

"Report to Filch tonight at 8 o'clock for you first detention. Now leave!" Severus snapped, sending the four students scrambling out the door like rats abandoning a sinking ship.

Once he was sure they were gone Dumbledore turned his attention to the chuckling man. "Wasn't that a bit lenient?" He asked curiously.

"Possibly," Severus replied, absently rubbing his stomach. "But I can't punish them for giving me this one chance at parenthood, even if it was by accident."

What on earth did he mean by that?

Before he could request Severus explain his last comment the door burst open and Argus Filch stormed in, cradling in his arms his cat who now sported a white bandage on her shortened tail.

"Headmaster!! Look at what those horrid brats have done to my dear Mrs. Norris!!" The man sobbed admist his anger.

The next second chaos erupted. Electra saw Mrs. Norris and gave a lusty howl, attempting to leap from Snape's lap. The Potions Master was hard pressed to hold onto his companion, despite her size and youth Electra was surprisingly strong. Mrs. Norris upon seeing and hearing the one who'd tried to eat her alive screeched like a derailing train. She shot out of Filch's arms, a blur of dust-colored fur and terrified yowls, streaking out the door and down the stairs. Electra growled in frustration. The sweet yummy cat had gotten away again! And she didn't even get a bite this time!! Glaring up at her master she slumped back down in his lap, a pouting look on her muzzle.

"YOU!!" Filch screeched, pointing a finger at the young dog. "It was you wasn't it!! You mained my dear cat!!"

Rather than look ashamed of her actions Electra proudly lifted her head high. ( I'd do it again in a heartbeat. That's one sweet piece of meat running there.) She licked her jaws in fond memory of her recent treat.

That only served to anger Argus even more. "You filthy little mutt!! I'll kill you--"

"You will not touch Electra." Severus' voice was low and deadly. The sheer danger in that voice transmitted to the enraged Caretaker for Filch backed away from the seated man. Anger still burned within his eyes, only now mingled with true fear. If there ever was anyone in the castle who could surpass Argus Filch in the ability to instill fear in others it was Severus Snape.

Argus turned to Dumbledore. "Headmaster!! Please! That creature's dangerous!! Surely--"

A raised hand brought the man to silence. "I understand that you're upset about this Argus, but really. Cats and dogs have been chasing each other since they were first domesticated. This is nothing new, just an interesting bit of life new to Hogwarts. I'm sure that Severus will see that Electra leaves Mrs. Norris alone from now on."

It was plain to see that Filch was still seething inside but he knew that the Headmaster would turn aside any appeal he made. The man was protecting that little mangler. Of course it was to be expected. The dog belonged to Snape, and Snape was carrying the Headmaster's children. With one last hate-laced look at the Corgi, who was at that moment giving the cantankerous man the raspberries, he stalked out of the office in search of his cat.

"I trust you have an explanation about this Severus?" Albus' eyes twinkled.

"Yes. It seems that Demi Corgis, or at least Electra here, have a taste for felines." He rubbed on the tri-color's warm fur, soothing both himself and his pet.

"Oh dear, that is a problem. I must inform Minerva about this."

"It would be best. Electra seems to think that cats are delicious, she ate the torn off bit of Mrs. Norris's tail."

( Next time it'll be more than the tail.) Electra promised.

"A few students should be informed as well, lest their companions end up as Electra's dinner." He scratched under the pup's chin, illiciting a throaty groan of approval.

Unfortunately the Headmaster didn't get the chance to inform Professor McGonagall of this unusual aspect of Electra's dietary preferences. Several important letters arrived from the Ministry that demanded his immediate attention and he simply couldn't break away.

So it was that to Severus fell the task.

Some say that Murphy was a muggle, others an insane wizard who took one too many hits to the head with a blunger. Whoever he was his laws came into effect at the worst possible times.

Like right now....

Severus was just going to have a word with Minerva before her next class started. He opened the door, expecting to see the Transfigurations teacher setting up her chalkboard or checking papers. Here's where good old Murphy stepped up to the plate. Minerva McGonagall wasn't seeing to her setups or writing notes, the animagi was setting atop her desk, preening her grey striped fur in the sunlight.

( CAT!!!) Electra leapt forwards before Severus could stop her.

"MINERVA RUN!!" Snape shouted.

The other teacher didn't need to be told twice. On hearing Snape's shout and seeing the oncoming dog with teeth barred McGonagall jumped off the desk and ran out the door, Electra hot on her heels.

The hound was almost drooling in anticipation. This cat was plumper, the scent sweeter. She would taste far better than that skeletal Mrs. Norris.

Snape chased after them as best as his condition allowed. He watched as Minerva tried every trick in the book to fend off the Corgi's charges. She leaped and twisted, ducked behind or beneath funiture and suits of armor, scrambled up to the top shelf of display cases. But Electra was a step behind her every inch of the way. It was clear the dog held more stamina than the Animagi did, sooner or later Minerva would falter and she'd be at the mercy of the hungry dog.

Then it hit him. "CHANGE MINERVA!!"

She almost missed that last foothold.

"CHANGE!!"

Change? That was it!!

Electra moved in for the kill as her prey stopped.

She rushed forwards, teeth bared, ready to bite down on the sweet flesh. Only when she closed her jaws her teeth encountered not the anticipated meat but layered folds of fabric. Disgusted she spat out the foul tasting cloth and looked up into the wide eyes of Professor McGonagall.

( Where's the cat? Bring her back! She's mine! I caught her! My treat!!) Electra snarled and growled at Minerva, voicing very loudly her complaints at her prize being snatched right from her very jaws.

"My word Severus! What on earth is wrong with your pet?" McGonagall asked breathlessly. That was the most strenuous workout she'd had in quite a long while.

"Perhaps we could set down somewhere while I explain?" He himself was a bit winded. When the witch said at the shop that Electra would be much stronger and faster than her size implied why didn't he think to ask her just how fast and strong?

"Of course. We can have some tea." Minerva allowed Severus to guide her. Electra dragged along behind them grumbling and cursing the human Murphy, vowing to bite the git right in the family jewels should she ever meet him.

In the Gryffindor dorms Harry and his friends were getting ready to do some snooping. With care and a bit of reverence Potter pulled out his father's invisiblity cloak from it's hiding place in his trunk.

" Thank Merlin the day is over!" Severus stretched as he entered his bed chambers.

The day had certainly been full of surprises. First Electra popping her little cat hunger, the confrontation with Filch, and the near devouring of McGonagall.

And if that wasn't enough there was the events in his own classes.

For many years Severus had cultivated a reputation as a severe and intimidating teacher, a mean, biased, and cruel indivdual that favored his own house while working against all others, most especially Gryffindor. Students passed on to their siblings tales of his bullying.

With all that he'd done one would think that he was one of the most, if not the most, hated teacher in the entire school.

So why on earth were the students now bending over backwards to help him?

The only explanation he could come up with was because of his pregnancy.

Children from every class had offered to help pass out material for the day's lesson, collect papers for him, and assist in cleaning up for the next batch of students. Everytime he went to sit there was a boy or girl there to steady him, and again when he moved to rise. Little tidbits kept ending up on his desk along with suggestions from students who had younger siblings. They offered him the remedies their mothers used when pregnant on the various aches and symptoms.

A few were incredibly strange and didn't strike him as being usable, while others sounded very promising. Those he'd kept to show to Poppy tomorrow. If she approved maybe they might help him navigate though some of the rougher patches.

Stipping his robes off Severus headed into the bathroom. A nice hot shower would ward off a bit of his discomfort and wash away some of the tension he was carrying. Once again he scrubbed till his hair was sparkling clean. Snape was beginning to like the feel of clean hair. Done, he dried off and donned his night robe.

The warm and inticing scent of chicken and herbs assaulted his nostrils the moment he opened the door.

His stomach growled, reminding him he hadn't eaten much earlier.

There was Remus and Dumbledore setting up the table, laying out plates and pouring the drinks. He frowned when he saw Black, in Snuffles form, laying quietly over to one corner. He didn't want the Animagi near him, not after the man had threatened him and nearly hurt his children. But Electra was keeping the brute in line. It was a rare sight, watching a pup pacing before a dog many times her size, shooting sharp glares and ominious little growls at him every time he moved so much as an inch. For his part Black looked frustrated. It was obvious the man wanted to transform but couldn't, the pup would tear into him the moment she realized who he was.

"There you are Sev, come on over and sit down. The house elves really outdid themselves this time." Remus greeted the other man with a friendly smile.

"Very well. I suppose I can put up with the two of you long enough to eat." His sneer only brought an ever bigger smile to Remus' face as the werewolf helped him set down.

"I expected that you might wish to avoid the Great Hall tonight. Perhaps it would be best if you took your meals here till the talk dies down a bit." Albus smiled as poured Severus a nice glass of milk.

The meal was indeed delicious. Chicken pot pies stuffed with tender white meat and vegetables, a lovely garden salad, fresh baked bread, and lemon meringue pie for desert. Both men kept his plate full, talking all the while about the day's events, keeping Severus distracted enough that he hardly noticed how much he'd managed to eat. Remus dished up a plate for Sirius. He offered Electra some but she refused. The dog would only except treats or food from her master.

Once the meal was done and the house elves had cleared away the dishes the three men and two dogs moved over to set by the warm fire. Severus sighed as Albus himself assisted in elevating his feet by slipping an old footstool beneath him.

Electra, seeing that her master was comfortable and safe, hopped down from the chair she strolled out of the room, heading towards one of the storerooms.

"Where's she off to?" The werewolf asked as he took his seat.

"To use the litterbox I expect." Snape replied.

"She's box trained?" Remus was astonished. "I didn't think you could do that with dogs."

"Why not, you think I could take her walkies whenever she needed to go? Besides, you've got Black potty trained don't you?"

Dumbledore chuckled, the image of Remus taking Sirius for walkies popping into his head.

Entering the classroom was easier than the three friends had expected. Someone left the door unlocked.

Even better, whoever that person was had also left the door to Snape's private rooms slightly ajar. It only took a little effort to ease the heavy oak door wide enough to slip through.

Comfortable, warm, and well fed, Severus felt himself getting drowsy as he sat by the fire, tenderly stroking his swollen stomach. The motion soothing, for himself as well as the two nestled within him. They seemed to gravitate towards his hand, almost as if begging to be touched. The sensation of their movements astonishing to him. There was life inside him. Right at this moment he felt so at peace that Snape never wanted it to end.

For Albus, Remus, and Sirius this was a side of Snape they'd never seen before.

"Severus? May I ask a question?" Albus ventured softly, trying not to dislodge the Potions Master from his current mood.

"Hmm? Of course Headmaster." Severus' voice was soft, the words languid.

"What exactly did you mean in my office today? When you said this one chance at parenthood."

A shadow passed over Snape's eyes. "I believe you know Headmaster the effects of prolonged use of the Cruciatus Curse. Insanity once a victim has been under it's influence for more than ten minutes."

"Sadly yes." Dumbledore sighed, gazing into the fire with tired eyes. "Poor Longbottom's parents were driven insane by it's use. They're both in St. Mungo's, neither are ever expected to recover."

"I remember that all too well. But have you ever heard of what the effects of repeated short term use of the curse can do to a human body?" When the two men and dog in his audience shook their heads he continued.

"Voldemort always did enjoy torturing his Death Eaters for the slightest mistake, even if there wasn't one he'd make up some excuse that he could use as justification for cursing us. Those that fought the curse, that held out against screaming or begging, he cursed more often than the rest. He got off on it you see, the pain he inflicted on others excited him. Of us all I fought the most, so I was cursed the most."

He stopped for a moment to collect his thoughts. "I can't even begin to count how many times the bastard cursed me during my first year as a Death Eater, I lost count after 42. As I said, repeated exposure does damage to the victim's body. In my case it rendered me sterile."

"Severus!" Remus was besides the man, reaching out for his hand.

Now Dumbledore understood.

"I've known for many years now that I could never father children. When I was a child I dreamt of finding a wife and having a large family. I should have known better than to harbor such dreams. Once my condition was discovered I cut myself off from everyone, even the one I loved. I couldn't bear to tell her I couldn't give her the family we both so wanted. So I let her go, forced her away from me and back into the arms of her old boyfriend."

"Lily." Remus breathed.

"Yes Lupin, I loved Lily, I would've married Lily. But I wouldn't burden her with this heartache. She was meant to be a mother Remus, and she was such a good one. It still hurts you know, to look at Harry and see Lily in his eyes. He should've been my son, should've had a better upbringing, surrounded by a loving family as big as the Weasleys. But that wasn't to be."

"Severus I never knew," Albus was kneeling in front of the younger man, tears threatening to spill from his glistening eyes.

"What good whould it have done if you had known Albus? There was nothing you could've done to reverse it. But now thanks to Ms. Parkinson and her cohorts I have the chance to become a parent."

"These two," he smiled at his stomach. "They're going to be so loved Albus."

"Indeed they will be. You will make such a splendid mother." Dumbledore laid his hand atop of Severus' stomach, feeling his children move within the younger man's body.

One black eyebrow rose but he didn't comment on the word mother being applied to him. It was the truth after all; he was the one carrying them within his body so that made him the mother if one went by the dictionary's definition. Though if the man ever said outside of Snape's private quarters he'd find himself singing sorprano.

Within the corner Harry, Hermione and Ron had heard the whole thing. Now Harry understood a bit more about Snape and his hatred of him. Perhaps he could now find a way around it and become friends with the Professor who had loved his mother. It was Ron who reminded them they should leave before they were caught.

At that moment Electra came back into the room.

Additional scents alerted the Corgi there were more people in the room than before. Slipping into invisiblity her eyes easily picked out the mass in the corner. Snarling she charged, grabbing ahold of the fabric and holding fast.

In the visible world the tranquility of the moment was shattered by the sounds of growling and muted cursing. Electra popped into view, tugging on something she held fast in her teeth. Something which was covering several someones. Their shoes were now visible.

"POTTER!!" Snape roared.

"Oops." Harry's voice said.

*~*~*~*~*

You could've heard a pin drop in the silence that followed Potter's little exclamation.

Even Electra was silent, waiting for her master's orders.

Finally Dumbledore rose and stepped over to where parts of the three youths could still be seen peeking from beneath the cloak. "I think that we might dispense with this for the moment." The old wizard reached out and pulled the garnment off, leaving Harry, Ron, and Hermione completely visible.

"Well, well, if it isn't Potter and his cohorts." Snape sneered. "Haven't you ever heard of the old saying that curiousity killed the cat."

Electra perked up. ( Cat? Where's the cat?)

"What brings you here, unwanted and uninvited, to my private chambers? A little easedropping? Pinching a few potion components? Or are you just attempting to irritate me more than you do all day?" The Potions Master advanced slowly.

All three youths glanced nervously around.

"We just wanted..." Hermione began but faltered beneath Snape's withering gaze.

"Go on child," urged Dumbledore softly.

"We just wanted to make sure everything was all right." She meekly replied, knowing it was a lame excuse the minute it left her mouth.

"Indeed. And you expect me to believe that?" He shook his head at the thought. When Snape next looked at them the familiar sneer was firmly set in place. "What kind of ignorant git do you take me for!!???"

"A bloody big one." Ron muttered under his breath.

Unfortunately his little comment did not go unheard by the Potions Master.

"Of course you're right Mr. Weasley, you being an expert on the subject of gits. Now I ask again WHAT WERE YOU DOING SNEAKING INTO MY ROOMS?!!"

Before any of them could answer Severus suddenly gasped and doubled over.

For an man reputed to be 150 years old Dumbledore could move surprisingly fast when he wanted to.

He reached Snape's side before the striken man could hit the floor, pulling him close. With one sweep he had Severus cradled in his arms, carrying him the bed. Remus jumped for the floo powder the second he saw Snape in distress, calling for Poppy.

Albus eased Severus onto the bed. The younger man was pale, sweat beaded his brow as he gritted his teeth against some inner pain.

"Severus! Severus! Tell me where it hurts!"

Unable to talk at the moment Snape's hands fell to his stomach.

Behind them a rush of fire heralded Madame Pomfrey's arrival.

"Severus, stay calm, breathe for me." Poppy's calm voice sent a wave of relief through them all. Casting about with her wand the school's nurse took a reading on her patient. Another flick of her wand sent a warm golden glow floating down. Whatever spell it was she cast it helped for the lines of pain disappeared from Snape's face and his breathing became more calm and even.

"There, that's better isn't it?" She smoothed back his hair. "Just relax now, everything's fine."

"What's wrong with him Poppy? Is it the twins?" asked Dumbledore worriedly.

"Nothing's wrong," she said softly, continuing to stroke and calm her patient. "Just these two were being a bit more active than normal. Reacting to his agitation I expect."

"What?"

"Kicking, they were both kicking Albus." Severus whispered, still a bit shocky from the double assault against his innards.

"Why don't you try and get some rest Severus, you'll feel a great deal better when you wake." Poppy urged him, casting a sleep spell. He was out like a light in a heartbeat. "There, that should give him a few hours rest. He'll be sore for a bit though, that really was a rough row those two had going there."

"Thank you Poppy, could you please stay with him till I return? There is something I have to do."

"Of course Albus."

The Headmaster then turned his attention to the trio who'd started all this. "Harry, would you and your friends follow me please?"

"Ye-yes Sir."

Being that he was already tired from carrying the twins Severus slept for a bit longer than Poppy anticipated.

His eyelid fluttered open. He blinked at her, looking disoriented and disheveled.

"How do you feel now Severus?" the old nurse asked as her patient returned from the realm of dreams. Besides him Electra whined her own query.

"Hurts," he mumbled still not fully awake.

"Show me where dear." His hand slid down to cup around his stomach. "Here."

"Right where I thought it would, let's just try this then."

With careful prodding she urged him onto his back and allowed her to open his robes to expose his bare stomach. Removing a jar of lavendur-colored cream from her bag Poppy extracted a large dollop, rubbing it between her hands to warm it before application.

Snape hissed as the greased hands touched his skin bringing him fully back to awareness. He remained still as the old nurse continued to rub the sore muscle rememdy on, keeping the pressure just hard enough to ensure best benefit from the salve without adding to the already aching area. Breathing in the faint herbal smell he cataloged the salve's components. Not one he was very familiar with. Snape wondered if Poppy had the recipe.

"That feels absolutely splendid Poppy, what is it?"

Pleased with the mellow tone to the man's normally snide voice Poppy wiped her hands off and handed him the jar. "Aurora's soothing salve, made to ease sore muscles and joints associated with pregnancy."

"An excellent mixture, I feel much improved." One long fingered hand came to rest on his stomach, feeling the twins sedated movements within his body. "Poppy, I've been meaning to ask you a few questions about this."

"Eh? Why haven't you Severus? You know I'm perfectly willing to answer them, anything to make this whole situation easier for you." She sat down on the bed. In a show of appreciation the pup laid down besides Poppy, allowing the old nurse to pet her.

"Albus and Remus always seem to be hovering about somewhere. I'm surprised they're not here right now." He looked around as if expected the two to apparate into the room as if summoned by his question.

"The Headmaster is no doubt still talking to Mr. Potter, Mr. Weasley, and Ms. Granger. Professor Lupin and his dog went to see if he could mediate matters."

At the mention of Potter's name the Potions Master's face darkened.

Potter, always Potter.

Why couldn't the brat have for once minded his own business. Must he always have to know everything, even if it didn't concern him? Well, for once maybe he'd get the punishment he deserved. After all he and his cohorts were caught red-handed entering into a teacher's private quarters without permission. Surely Dumbledore would give them something more substantial than a slap on the wrist and a stern talking to.

"None of that now!" She tapped the end of his nose when that nasty frown began creeping back onto his face. "What did you want to ask me?"

Severus actually blushed in embarassment for a second before regaining his composure. "I noticed this some time ago, what is it?" His finger traced a dark line of skin down the center of his abdomen, stretching from his breastbone disappearing down into his boxers.

"Oh that, that's normal. It's called the linea nigra, it's just a pigmentation change in the skin brought on by all the hormones released during pregnancy. It should fade after you've given birth."

"Should?" One black eyebrow arched up.

"Well, on some women it never fully fades away. All we can do is wait and see what happens. If it persists and bothers you I can remove it after you're healed up."

Snape sighed. "Yes please. I'd rather not go through the rest of my life looking like some sick zebra."

"Next question?"

So Severus spent the next two hours asking every question he had on his pregnancy. Poppy was surprisingly full of knowledge on the subject and explained everything to him, even going so far as to conjure up several visual charts to demonstrate her words. The last question had just been successfully answered when Dumbledore bustled into the room.

"Severus, how do you feel now? Everything all right?" The old wizard sat down on the other side of the bed, one hand coming to rest on Snape's still exposed midsection.

"Better Albus, Poppy's remedies have taken away any lingering pain."

"Good, good. That is most welcome news." Albus beamed, watching the skin just to the left of his hand rise up a fraction as one baby kicked. "Still active I see."

"A good sign. Severus just needs to watch his own reactions. You have to remember dear that these little ones are going to react to your emotional state. The more aggravated you are the more they're going to move."

"Then I shall endeavor to be more placid." The younger wizard eyed the older one. "And what pray tell did you do with those little miscreants? Nothing too strenuous I hope." He asked snidely.

"Actually they will be serving detention for quite some time. Filch will be most happy with that I'm sure." He closed his eyes, a sad look on his lined face. "I've always been willing to be lenient where young Harry is concerned, making allowances for his inquistiveness in the light he often ends up confronting Voldemort at the end of each year. But entering your quarters without permission and agrivating your condition simply couldn't be tolerated."

"Simply amazing," Severus said in his best sarcastic tone. "You actually are trying to be firm aren't you?" He snorted. "Filch ought to instill a bit of disipline into the brats, but not nearly enough to curtail such outings. The boy attracts danger like a magnet, and on those rare occasions when it fails to find him he simply goes searching for it."

"He's just been trying to have a bit of fun. Harry's life has been very hard Severus, the happiest times of his life have all been here at Hogwarts and with the Weasleys over the summer."

This earned him an icy glare. "And my own life was better? I suffered far more at the hands of my realitives and schoolmates than Potter ever has, and never once did I receive an ounce of concern from you back in school."

Dumbledore flinched.

Here was a very touchy subject.

The old wizard knew very well he had failed to see Severus' pain during his school years. So fixated on the antics of James Potter and the Marauders during those dark years, Albus totally missed what those so-called 'pranks' of theirs did to the one student they targeted more than any other. The one student who needed the Headmaster's attention most never received it.

"That was so long ago Severus..."

"For you perhaps, but I must live with the after-effects every single day," one hand rubbed his left arm.

Dumbledore laid his hand on top of Snape's, stopping the motion. "I know I can never make up for my mistakes Severus, but I--."

Snape pushed aside the old man's hand. "Spare me your maudlin promises, I neither require or want them now. Perhaps had they been offered many years ago things might've been different."

Why did he have to bring this up now? Surely the man must know he did consider him a friend, one of the very few he had, there was just some black moments in that friendship between them that were better left untouched.

Dumbledore tried to speak, but his voice refused to work. There was something stuck in his throat that simply refused to budge. Tears blurred his vision. He blinked and several fell, wandering down his weathered face to wet his snowy white beard.

( Oh great! He's going all mushy on me!) Severus rolled his eyes heavenward. "Oh, very well! Do what you wish, you're going to anyway. Just quit crying, you're going to ruin my sheets."

Like a beam of sunshine on a cloudy day Dumbledore's mood brigthened immediately.

"I promise I will make things up to you Severus, mark my words I will!" And with that the old man pulled the younger into a hug. Snape growled, cursing his own maternity-spawned drive to comfort. What had he done to deserve this?

Finally the old man released him. "Just watch Severus. I will make matters better. I promise."

"I can hardly wait," he drawled smoothly, trying not to shake his head.

Somewhere out there someone must really be getting a good laugh out of all this.

Things were a bit rocky between the two men for a while. Not only was there the revived bitter memories to deal with but Snape's growing condition as well. Poppy was becoming concerned with the Professor's continued lack of stamina. By the end of the day the man was exhausted from teaching, even though he'd cut back on his roaming the room and most of the students were doing there best to help him. A few still acted as if the man was gutter-slime but there numbers were dwindling as the days went by.

When informed the Headmaster immediately contacted Bill Weasley and asked if he might be willing to step in and take Professor's Snape's place as potions instructor till Severus had recovered from delivering the twins. Having always wanted to try teaching the oldest Weasley son accepted. Naturally Snape did not take the news of his replacement too well.

"What exactly has possessed you!" He hissed sharply, eyes narrowed in anger. "I am perfectly capable of teaching my classes Headmaster. There was no need to bring Mr. Weasley back to Hogwarts."

"Now Severus do try to see this clearly. Poppy has expressed a concern about your health. You're practically grey and out on your feet at the end of each day. You fall asleep as soon as you stop moving." Blue eyes now grew serious. "Such exhaustion cannot be good for yourself, or the children."

Both the Headmaster and Poppy had noted that while Severus didn't care too much about his own comfort and health he was devoted to his children. If there was anything he could do to ensure their safety he'd do it.

"Very well," the black-clad man settled down a bit. "I concede, you have a valid point. But couldn't you have given me some warning? At the very least consulted me as to who might be best to handle my classes for now?"

Just the barest hint of smile played about Dumbledore's mouth. "And who would you have picked?"

Albus waited patiently for his answer.

Snape finally growled low in his throat. "Mr. Weasley."

"See? There was no need to consult you on the matter. We both knew young Bill was best suited as a substitute for you. What use would it have been for me to consult you?"

"At least I would've have the pleasure of arguing with you."

"I shall keept that in mind for next time."

"There'd better not be a next time."

"Just a little farther Severus." The ancient wizard urged the younger one onwards down the torch-lit hall.

"Where on earth are you taking me Albus? I have better things to do than waste my time on your frivilous ventures with Arthur Weasley's muggle finds."

"Nonsense! I know very well Poppy's curtailed your classroom duties. Bill Weasley's doing an excellent job filling in for you." He nudged the man to keep him moving.

"He may do well with the children but

"He may do well with the children but the man couldn't lay out a course
of studies to save his life. I need to work on the next two weeks to
see that all the relevent potions are listed and recipes laid out."
Severus snapped in exasperation.

"It can wait a little longer Severus. Ah! Here we are!" He patted the
door in question hard, making the wood resound with a dull thud.

"Very well, let's get this over with." Snape growled. "The sooner I see
this latest bit of idiocy Arthur Weasley has sent you the sooner I can
get back to my work."

"Right this way then." He opened the door and bowed Severus inside.

The room was completely dark.

"Albus, what is the meanin--"

With a bright burst the torches lit all at once.

"SURPRISE!!"

Severus blinked in astonishment. The room was filled with people,
students and staff, tables full of brightly wrapped packages some of
which were rather large and oddly shaped, and a large table filled with
all kinds of foods and desserts.

"Wha-what is this?" He stammered.

"What's it look like silly? It's a baby shower." The nearest person,
Remus, answered him.

"A baby shower?" Still in shock Severus didn't fight as the werewolf
guided him over to a nice comfortable looking chair with padded
footstool.

"A baby shower." he caught Albus's eyes, fixing on the twinkling blue
orbs. "You're dead Albus, you're really dead." The man hissed.

"Of that I'm sure Severus, but in the meantime why don't you just set
here and enjoy." said the merry old man. "After all it wouldn't do for
all this effort to go to waste."

Snape snarled silently. He would bide his time, sooner or later that
barking old goat was going to get it, and he dearly wished to be on the
presenting end. Patience would bring it's own rewards.

Luckily no one attempted to force the guest of honor to wear any sort
of party hat otherwise the entire festivity would've ended on a rather
bloody note. There were a great deal of joking and laughter, some at
the expense of the Potions Master, who seemed to take the whole matter
in a positive note. If only they knew that inside the man was carefully
cataloging everything, making notes as to who he had to retaliate
against later.

Many would pay for the indignities of this day.

The only redeeming factor in this whole fiasco was the much needed
materials he would be receiving. He would've had to do some shopping
for the babies himself, but didn't have much of a clue on what all he'd
need besides diapers and clothes. This shower solved that dilemma, or
at least he hoped it did. If Dumbledore were involved who knows what
might be in those brightly wrapped boxes.

Finally the time for the presents came.

"Here Professor," Draco offered a silver and green wrapped to the
seated wizard.

Severus reluctantly accepted the gift and carefully began stripping the
foil wrap off.

"Oh! For Prospero's sake Sev! Don't you know how to unwrap a present?"

Snape sneered menacingly at the werewolf. "I prefer not to damage the
paper."

"It's just wrapping paper, that's half the fun in getting a present;
tearing off the paper." Remus nearly whined.

Rolling his eyes Severus quickly ripped off the remaining paper rather
than listen to Lupin start whining. Exposed now was a rather plain
white box. With no small amount of trepidation Severus removed the lid.

Inside, nestled in folds of tissue paper, were four little bodysuits,
two in blue the others delicate pink. He held up one of the little
garments, noting the soft fabric and how light it felt.

"Do you like them?" the Slytherin asked softly.

Severus blinked, he had to answer the boy, to thank him for this gift.
But it was so hard. Insults came all too easily to his lips, but for
Severus to actually thank someone? Never the less Severus got it out of
his mouth. The boy beamed at his teacher and impulsively hugged the man
before common sense interceeded.

So it went for the next hour and a half.

When at last the last package was unwrapped and the gift inside held up
for the by now standard aww sounds of appreciation.

Neither one of the twins would need clothes washed that first two
weeks. He had enough body suits, lap tees, pants, t-dresses, jumpers,
overalls, robes, caps, booties, socks, and other garments to last quite
a while. Thank heavens all those that gave clothing, namely students,
had stuck to simple colors and patterns, though there wasn't any true
black in the lot. He expected that, black would just have to wait till
they were a bit older. Pansy, Millie, and Morgana all pitched in and
purchased a large supply of disposable diapers, knowing that their
teacher wouldn't care for washing out the old fashioned cloth ones.

Professor Sprout gave him a changing table. Flitwick found a lovely
dark cherry rocking chair that would fit in nicely with Snape's present
furniture.

Minerva gave him sheets, comforters, and blankets, each with an animal
motiff. She'd stuck close to home with dragons and lions. Though they
looked somewhat comical being designed to be cute rather than
realasitic Severus actually found himself liking them. Incredibly Remus
found two stuffed dragons and two lions, all stitchwork with nothing
that could be pulled off, just the right size for little fingers to
grasp that matched up with the bedding.

Trelawney had surprised everyone by not only coming down from her lofty
tower but giving Severus a sturdy built child's rocking horse. Poppy's
contribution was a good supply of baby goods such as shampoos, lotions,
soaps, powders, wipes, creams, and a book on basic baby care.

"Read through that, they'll be a test later." She winked at him, though
from the serious tone of her voice he understood she wasn't joking.
Damm, just what he needed, an education on the techniques of
motherhood.

When it was all over Snape had received the majority of items necessary
to raise two children, as well as a few not so necessary items.

Exactly how many socks did two babies need?

Before leaving everyone pitched in and carried his booty back to his
new quarters there to be stored till the nursery was finished.

"Be honest with me Severus, that really wasn't so bad was it?"
Dumbledore asked later as he assisted the weary man into bed.

"Very well, I concede that. But please refrain from springing such
surprises in the future. I find them on the whole to be most annoying."
He replied sleepily.

"Of course, of course." Albus chuckled, stroking the younger man's soft
black hair. "Goodnight Severus, sweet dreams."

"A rarity here," the sad whisper barely reached the old man's ears.
" Too many bad memories."

Grief rose once more in Dumbledore's heart. He watched silently as
Severus slipped off to sleep, his face loosing much of it's
intimidating mask, leaving behind a young man worn now by the rigors of
his life.

( What would you have been had I not failed you?) The old wizard
thought sadly, tenderly whispering a sleep charm, sending Snape the
gentle dreams he so craved. ( You would be happily married, your life
filled with love, a wife, children. But the past is the past, we cannot
change it however much we desire to. The future though is yet to be,
and that I will strive to make into something better for you Severus. I
swear this on my very soul.)

With one final look as the sleeping man Dumbledore retreated to his own
rooms next door. He needed his rest as well, tomorrow looked to be a
very busy day.

Poppy smiled as her special patient entered the hospital wing right on
time. Severus may not like her poking and prodding but he endured it
for the sake of his children. And by now she hardly even noticed
Electra's presense since nothing short of an unforgivable curse was
going to force the dog to abandon her master's side.

"Good morning Professor, you're looking well today. Good night?"

"Quite good actually." Snape allowed a small smile to grace his face.
Yes, last night had indeed been good. He couldn't remember a single
nightmare coming to destroy his peaceful rest.

The nurse assisted Snape in laying down on the bed they were using as
an exam table.

"Any problem I need to be aware of? Notice anything off?" Poppy began
the routine questions, opening Snape's robes to expose his heavy belly.

" Nothing new, just the back aches are getting worse." He flinched a
little as her fingers pressed on a tender spot.

"Hurts there?"

"The babies were very active earlier. I suppose I should make
reservations now seeing as they're already practicing for soccer." This
was delivered with a perticular little laugh Severus began using over
the last month. It wasn't sharp or bitter, or the malicious bark he had
been known to use. No, this was a genuine laugh stemming from some long
hidden part of his soul. It was wonderful to hear, almost as good as
the man's slowly blossoming sense of humor.

"Try resting more. Have you been taking your supplements?" Poppy pulled
out her wand for the next round of tests.

"Every morning Poppy, just as you perscribed."

Both turned towards the door as it opened.

"Oh! Good morning Headmaster." Poppy greeted the ancient wizard.

"Headmaster." His title and a short nod was all the greeting he
received from Snape.

"My mail was surprisingly light today, so I finished early. I thought
since I had this free time on my hands I would come here. Would it be
all right if I set in? I would dearly love to see what goes on here."

Here Snape found himself hard pressed not to blush, shooting a
distressed glace to the older woman.

Several times over the years Dumbledore had seen the Potions Master in
various stages of undress, mostly after returning from another spying
mission. Severus never minded those times really, he was injured and in
need of assistance. What happened was necessary to treat him. Now in
the course of his pregnancy Albus, and Remus, had seen more of his hide
than he wished. True, most of those times he'd been half out of it so
his sense of modesty hadn't interfered.

During the last few exams however Poppy had preformed some
very...extensive tests that left Snape with precious little in the way
of modesty. He would prefer not to be placed in that same position in
front of the old wizard. He wanted to retain some shreds of his
tattered dignity.

Seeing his discomfort Pomfrey patted Snape's arm. "I just need to run a
few more tests and then we're done here. Do you mind if he stays
Severus?"

Grateful that the woman had understood his unspoken plea the
black-haired man agreed.

So Albus settled down in a chair besides the bed, watching as the
school nurse checked Snape over, noting down each test result on the
man's medical records. After a half hour everything was done.

"Well? What's the verdict." Snape asked, at the moment being too
comfortable to bother with moving about.

"Excellent." Poppy beamed. "Both you and the twins are very healthy.
And I see no reason for that to change so long as you keep following my
instructions."

Albus let out the breath he'd been holding. With all that happened
recently the old wizard had been worried about Severus and the
children. Several times Poppy had almost drawn her wand on the old man
when his persistent questions became too much.

"Ouch!" Snape yelped.

"Another goal?" Poppy's little joke didn't mask her concern as she
checked the area where the baby had kicked.

"Must have went into overtime." There was that smile again. It was
coming more often.

"Goal? Overtime? What are you two talking about?" The confused man kept
looking back and forth between the two.

"Here Albus, give me your hand."

Guiding his hand to Snape's stomach Poppy positioned it just over the
area where the activity was centered. Beneath his palm one foot lashed
out causing Snape to growl and Albus to yelp in surprise.

"I see what you mean." Again the bump came, though not so strongly as
before. "Is this any danger to Severus Poppy? Could they hurt him?"
There, the worry was back.

"No need to fret Albus, it may be a bit on the painful side but it's
doesn't pose any kind of threat." She patted the old man's hand.

Worries temporarily abated Dumbledore's curiousity rose once more.

Snape squirmed, feeling a bit uncomfortable as Albus's hands moved
about his stomach.

"What is this Poppy? Is it a foot?" Dumbledore's voice was filled with
curiousity.

Another set of hands joined the Headmaster's. "No, no, that's actually
a hand."

"And this?" His hand moved to cup a larger protrusion.

"A head naturally."

Both of them laughed softly, poking and prodding him like he was one of
Hagrid's new pets till he couldn't stand it any longer. Poppy and Albus
jumped when he cleared his throat.

"As much as I hate to interupt this little exploartory expedition I
would like to get up now." Snape's mocking tone and hard eyes stated
quite firmly that he wouldn't take kindly to them attempting to resume
touching him.

"Of course Severus."

He was quite grateful for the steadying hands which assisted him up but
he certainly wasn't going to say it aloud. With as much dignity one
could muster Severus adjusted his robes, feeling much better once he
was securely hidden beneath his black robes.

"Remember Severus, same time next week." She called after the wizard as
Dumbledore followed him out into the hall. "And don't hesitate to call
me if you start having problems."

"That woman." He groaned, his slow pace easily matched by the older
wizard.

"Yes, Madame Pomfrey is a wonderful woman. We're quite lucky to have
her here." Blue eyes twinkled with surpressed mirth as Professor Snape
began muttering a little under his breath.

Passing by the Great Hall Snape noted that lunch would be starting
soon, children were streaming in. Many stopped and said hello to their
Headmaster and Potions Master before going to their seats. Snape was
startled to discover quite a number of the students were genuinely
concerned for him and not just because he was carrying the Headmaster's
children. Children from every year were coming up to him and asking
about his health, if there was anything they could do for him. Perhaps
the most shocking of all was the repeated request to know when he would
be returning to teach. The substitute was nice but they missed him in
the classroom.

By Merlin's beard! What had posessed these children? They said they
missed him, that they wanted him back! Him, the most dreaded and feared
instructor on the faculty!

Besides him Albus fought not to burst out into laughter. The sight of
Severus Snape totally flabbergasted happened so very rarely. He must
remember to store this in his pensive, it being too priceless a memory
to risk being lost to age and workloads. Steering the younger man
through the crowds Albus saw that Snape was comfortably seated before
taking his own.

As they ate Snape noticed Albus' hand kept slipping into his pocket to
figet with something. He tried several times to see what the thing was,
but everytime he got close Dumbledore would always shift it out of
eyesight.

"What have you got there Albus?" He asked quietly so as to not disturb
Dumbledore too much.

"Oh, nothing, nothing at all." Albus grinned innocently and Snape
became even more curious.

. Once finished, they retired to Snape's quarters since the Potions
Master was once again starting to doze off on his feet. Being a man and
not designed to handle pregnancy Severus tired more easily than a woman
in his situation would. Sleeping seemed to take up most of his days
now.

As Albus was helping him remove his shoes the mysterious item fell out
of the old wizard's pocket, rolling across the floor to stop by
Electra. Curious as her master the dog immediately began sniffing the
new object.

"What? Oh dear! Here now, give me that." Albus said as he all but dove
for the box. Evidently Electra thought he wanted to play for she
snatched up the box and took off as fast as her legs would carry her.
It was indeed a rare treat, one that had Severus laughing so hard he
was ready to wet himself, to watch the vernerable Headmaster scurring
about the room in pursuit of the cunning hound. The chase ended when
Electra hopped up on the bed besides her master and deposited the box
in his outstretched hand.

"Could I have that back Severus?" Dumbledore attempted to retreive his
box but Snape pulled it back out of his reach.

Eyeing the old wizard Snape opened the box.

Nestled within a bed of red silk was a ring. A rather gaudy one at
that.

"Oh Gods!" Severus breathed. "Do not tell me this is an engagement
ring, and if it is it had better be for Minerva." Black eyes burned
with building anger, one hand reaching for his wand.

"No! No! No! It's nothing like that!" Albus was frantically waving his
hands about. "It's a soul ring."

Where had he heard that term before?

"There's a little bit of my soul embedded within that ring Severus.
With it I can watch over you even if I were half a continent away,
equally you could follow my every move with it."

"But to bind a piece of your own soul! Albus, if someone like Lucius
were to get a hold of this.."

"I expect the ring to remain a secret between us Severus, no one else
need know."

Tentantively the other wizard reached out, folding Snape's fingers over
the ring. "Keep it Severus. Whenever you need me, no matter what time
it is or what may be happening, merely use the ring. Call me, and I
will come."

There was something infinitely appealing to having the Headmaster at
his beck and call, but Severus would not abuse this precious gift.
" Thank you." He said in a strangely choked voice, tears brimming in his
eyes. No one had ever cared for him so much.

"You're welcome." And Albus was back to his kindly grandfather bit.
" Now let's get you into those nice warm jammies and into bed. If you're
very good I'll even read you a bedtime story."

"Albus."

"Yes Severus?"

"Does insanity run in your family? Or were you just dropped on your
head too many times as a child."

A grin to rival the cheshire cat's blossomed on the old man's face.
" Now you know I can't answer that. It would spoil the surprise."

Snape raised his eyes to the ceiling. "Oh Merlin! Why me?"

Naturally he didn't get answer. Why should he? Whatever insane deities
were directing this twisted little drama were having far too much fun,
all at his expense. It was almost enough to turn a man to drink.

But you can't get drunk on milk and fruit juice.

Damn.

*~*~*~*~*

Today had not been a good day for Severus. Albus, and the whole school,
seemed to be in some grand scheme to drive him stark raving mad!

The man was absolutely impossible! He wanted Remus to move next to
Snape's quarters, to assist the Headmaster in keeping better watch on
him. Ranting for ten minutes about the unfairness of the whole
situation didn't help one bit. No matter what the black-robed man said
Dumbledore was going to do exactly what he wanted.

And the students! If they weren't trying to offer him assistance they
were making fun of him. True it was only a few groups amidst the sixth
and seventh years. He couldn't help but pick up some of the comments,
or the miming motions some of them made behind his back.

Even his own body was betraying him. His emotions were currently riding
the rollercoaster from hell. One minute he was his usual snarling self,
the next he was bawling his eyes out over an article in the Daily
Prophet, or unexpectedly falling into a fit of maternal caring which he
then heaped on the head of some unsuspecting student or creature.

And what was it with all this sleeping?!!
He'd spent more time in bed these last few months than he had most
school years, and he didn't even have the excuse of because he wanted
to. It might be better if there were some raven haired beauty eager for
him to...well to prove he was a master in more than just potions. But
that was really a dream, sex was out of the question. Poppy had stated
that quite firmly.

Then, if all that wasn't bad enough, Voldemort had to go calling!

He knew Albus had forbidden him to go if called, but right now he
wasn't in the mood to do anything that the Headmaster said. Sneaking
out of the school through one of the secret passageways, Snape walked
to the edge of the forbidden forest and apparted to the meeting.

Of course it would have to be Lucius Malfoy that would be the first one
to spot him.

"Well, well Severus, seems you're letting yourself go a bit." His oily
voice was smug as he eyed Snape's rounded midsection with distaste.

"What are you talking about Lucius?" Severus sighed, in no mood for
riddles.

"Why that lump of lard you're carrying around there," the elder Malfoy
poked Severus in the belly, reminding the Potion's Master he forgot to
restore the glamour before leaving Hogwarts. "What's a matter dear
friend, couldn't keep out of the icebox?"

Sudden anger rose like a hurricane in Snape.

Unknown to him Lucius Malfoy had just committed a major sin in the book
of pregnancy, he'd called a pregnant person fat. Even worse, that
person was in the midst of some the worst mood swings ever inflicted
upon a human on the face of the earth.

"WHAT!! HOW DARE YOU!!" Severus whipped out his wand. "I AM NOT FAT!
I'M PREGNANT! CRUCIO!!"

It was the first time in years Snape had used one of the unforgivable
curses but he didn't falter or hold back. Lucius fell over, screaming
and writhing about like a fish out of water.

"What is happening here?" Lord Voldemort demanded as he emerged from
the old victorian house, drawn by Malfoy's agonized squealing and the
sensation of power. Raw, undefined, power.

"Malfoy made the mistake of calling Snape fat Master." Goyle said.

"He's not fat Master, he says he's pregnant." Crabbe added before his
Lord could cast a Cruciatus on Severus.

"Pregnant? How very interesting." Voldemort lowered his wand and walked
forwards, flanked by several of his Death Eaters. "Severus, release
Lucius."

Snape's head jerked around. "But he called me fat." His voice was
broken, almost whining.

"Quit being a child and let him go, he did not know of your pregnancy."

" Child! Why does everyone think that?!" Snape hissed, pacing furiously
in front of Lucius' now unconscious body, having been released from the
curse by a simple wand flick.

Before Voldemort could say something that could get him killed another
Death Eater stepped forwards.

"They just don't know what you're going through Severus. It's very
unfair to you." He said in a soothing voice, motioning behind his back
for Crabbe and Goyle to shield their Master in case he failed.

"Everything's so messed up!" Tears were actually rolling down Snape's
pale cheeks. "Everyone is either treating me like I'm made of porcelain
or like I'm some kind of disqusting slime. I'm so tired of it!!"

The man stepped forwards and took the crying Potion's Master in his
arms. "There, there, it's all right. They don't understand what they're
doing. Idiots don't know that smothering a person does them no good. Do
you want to sit down? Walking so far must've been hard on you and the
baby."

His soothing tone was slowly toning down Snape's mood. "Babies," he
corrected him automatically. "I'm having twins."

"Even more reason to sit. Maybe we could have some tea."

Snape allowed the man to lead him back to the stately old house. "Do
you have any cookies?" Severus asked as they went inside.

Crabbe and Goyle sighed in relief.

"That was close."

"Yeah, he's really got it bad, poor bastard."

Behind them their Lord was getting a little upset."Would either of you
explain what is wrong with Severus? And why you felt the need to
protect me from him?"

"Snape's having mood swings Master." Goyle went first. "Every man whose
wife has been pregnant will tell you that those are something to be
afraid of."

"Yeah, one minute they're all nice and sweet, the next it's rabid
dragon on a rampage!" Crabbe shuddered. "I thought Christina was going
to castrate me when she was carrying our son."

"Hmmp! My wife almost did. Caught her standing by the bed with a
kitchen knife. I thought my life was over!" Another Death Eater
supplied.

"Are these mood swings truly that dangerous?" Voldemort was astonished.
Why had he not heard of this before? Such women would be wonderful
Death Eaters.

Caught up in their discussion of the hazzards of maternity Voldemort's
followers were bolder now as it seemed their Dark Lord wasn't in the
mood to curse, but to listen.

"Oh yes, mainly because you never know what will trigger the next one.
Of course there are a few things to avoid at all cost like calling them
fat or hinting they don't excite you sexually right now. But most of
the time you don't even know which one will set it off."

"Luckily Tortura was here, if anyone can handle Severus it would be
him." Nott said.

"And that's because?"

"He has five children Master."

Every man with the exception of their Lord shuddered.

"Man must be a masocist."

"How did he do it, that's what I want to know."

"You got that right. I have only one child and nearly got mained for
life."

"Perhaps we should leave them alone for a bit, till Severus calms
down." Voldemort said, walking towards his chair. "Crabbe, you may fill
Tortura and Severus in later."

"Yes Master."

"And someone drag Lucius over here and wake him." Goyle and Nott
grabbed the unconscious man by the ankles and dragged him over before
their master, the move giving everyone gathered the perfect view of his
underwear. Where the man got knickers with little yellow duckies on
them nobody could say.

Several hours later the meeting was over and almost everyone had
returned to their normal lives.

Lucius tried to linger behind, his desire to hex Snape couldn't hide
beneath the thin veil of his supposed concern. It was only after being
subjected to another curcio that he relented and apparated back to his
manor though not without some assistance from Crabbe and Goyle.

Voldemort stepped into the library and immediately saw Tortura setting
in an old chair near the sofa and it's occupant. Severus was asleep. He
looked so delicate asleep, one long fingered hand draped over his heavy
stomach. Again, he felt it, the strange sensation lingered in the air.
Power, untapped and still growing, enough to raise the thin dusting of
hair on his arms and neck.

"Good evening Master," the red-head rose and greeted his Lord softly.
" Severus fell asleep shortly after he had his second cup of tea. I
thought it best to let him sleep off the latest swing."

"I shall not punish you for this Tortura as you served me well by
preventing me from harming Severus and his children." A flick of his
wand and his chair slid over. The tall man settled down with a sigh,
black robes drapping about his skeletal frame like a dead man's shroud.
" What did he tell you of his condition?"

"The basics of it are that some of his students decided to get a
mudblood in their class expelled and a teacher sacked by creating a
ficticious affair and a totally real baby as proof. Severus was
accidently hit with the potion and is now carrying twins. The father is
Dumbledore."

"Dumbledore?" Scarlett snake eyes widened. So that explained the
feelings of power that eminated from Severus.

Then a sight which would send most men screaming into the night
occured; Voldemort smiled.

Not an evil smile which promised painful death, but a rare delighted
smile sat upon those thin lips.

Tortura shivered.

On the couch Severus moaned and shifted, his hand unconsciously rubbing
his stomach. Beneath his black robes the skin heaved as one of the
twins lashed out with foot or hand. Voldemort was out of his chair in a
heartbeat, kneeling before the prone man, his unnaturally long bony
fingers gently stroking the younger's mans rounded midsection, a look
of concern on his serpentine face.

Severus awoke to the sight of the Dark Lord himself on his knees
besides him rubbing his stomach with those errie hands. He didn't know
whether to scream in terror or laugh at the sight. At the moment he
could do neither, fear for himself and his children having froze him to
the spot. Voldemort smiled again when he noticed Snape was awake.

"This pleases me my Faithful One. There is great power in them, I can
feel it even now as they rest inside you. Carry them well Severus, for
when the time is right I will take them and declare them my heirs."

"Heirs?" He finally managed to whisper, too shocked to speak any
louder.

"Yes. It is only fitting that I take Dumbledore's children as my own.
They will be my greatest victory over the old fool. Imagine what his
shame will be when he learns that his own children are Death Eaters,
that they are slaughtering the very muggles and wizards he seeks to
protect." He caressed Snape's face, trailing fingertips gently over the
pale skin. Beneath his fingers one of the twins kicked again, and
Voldemort cooed softly as he stroked to calm the little one.

"Tortura, see that Severus is returned safely to Hogwarts." His eyes
drifted back to Snape. "You shall not be called to a meeting again my
Dear One till after these two are born, I will not risk you falling ill
from any night chill, or injured in a raid. Take care, do as your
healer bids."

And with that the evil wizard bent down and placed a tender kiss on the
younger man's head.

Thankfully the Dark Lord thought those tears his servant shed to be
ones of joy and not the fear and loathing they really were. Or how
Snape longed to throw up in utter disgust when he kissed him.

The minute Severus was safely back within the Hogwarts strong walls he
fairly ran to his rooms, ignoring everything around him.

He hardly noticed the worried look of the ghosts or the one which
Hagrid sported. All that was on his mind at that moment was reaching
his rooms. Once inside he locked the door with metal and spells. Now
feeling safer Snape proceeded to strip off his clothes, practically
tearing off the black robes. He couldn't stand the feel of it any
longer. Voldemort had touched these robes, had touched him. His skin
crawled, still feeling those cold fingers, that frigid kiss. So intent
on ridding himself of the taint Severus didn't even realize there were
hands helping him, soft voices talking to him, begging him to speak.

The next thing he knew he was in the bathroom, seated in the tub. Warm
water surrounded him, leeching away some of his tension. The hands were
back, scrubbing his limbs and back, and still the voices continued
talking, soothing burrs which finally began to penetrate Snape's
shocked mind.

"..happened? Severus, can you hear me?"

That was Dumbledore's voice. He was the one scrubbing his back.

"Slowly Albus, he's had a scare. Don't push him too fast."

Lupin, Remus was here too, gently soaping his arm.

"Albus?" He blinked, looking up into blue eyes filled with concern.

"Severus? Where have you been child?"

"He wants them.."

"Who Sev?" Remus asked. "Who wants them?"

"Voldemort. He wants my babies." Here Severus curled up a little
tighter around himself, arms wrapped protectively around his unborn
children. Seeing as his position threatened to drown him the two
wizards levitated Snape out. He was quickly dried, dressed, and settled
into his bed. Electra was already waiting there, snuggling up to her
master, making little whuffling noises which further soothed Severus.
Absently he began stroking her soft fur.

"Severus you promised me that would not answer his summons."

"No I didn't, you forbid me to, you never made me promise." He replied
softly, listening as Remus summoned a house elf and ordered a light
meal to be prepared. "You've been so insistant, everything had to be
your way, I couldn't stand it. When the call came--"

"You went to spite me." said Albus softly, sadness etching his already
lined face. "Oh Severus, I am sorry."

"He knows they're yours. He wants them Albus, he wants to make them
Death Eaters. Voldemort wants them for his heirs."

This not only upset the Headmaster it enraged him. How dare he!!
Parental fury rose within his breast. Even if he died in the process
Albus would never let that evil creature come within a thousand feet of
his dear children and their mother. Here a small smile flitted across
his face. Albus had managed to get away with it once already, perhaps
he should start calling him their mother from now on so Severus could
get used to it before he heard it come from one their children's
mouths.

Reaching out he took one of Snape's long fingered hands in his own.
" Severus? Listen to me child. Voldemort shall never lay so much as
fingernail on your children, I swear this on very soul."

"Albus, you can't! He'll--" Severus' protests were silenced by the long
finger that rose to still his lips.

"Believe in me Severus, Voldemort will never lay his hands on your
children." He cupped the Potions Master's cheek.

Snape sighed, leaning into the touch. It was a comfort that he took
now, his heart too in need of this loving human contact for him to
refuse it. Pregnancy had scraped raw his nerves and left his soul bare
to every little pain, no matter how slight. The whispered jokes, the
crude gestures, the laughter no one thought he heard. It all hurt so
much.

His only solace lay in the affection and friendship from a precious
few. Albus, Remus, Hagrid, Poppy, his dear Electra, and a quite large
contingent of students who seemed determined to protect him. True
friends were something he had never had before but was quickly becoming
addicted to. So long as he had their support Snape knew everything
would turn out all right. Even with Voldemort's threat hanging over his
children's.

The food arrived and both men sat and talked to Snape as he ate,
carefully steering the conversation away from anything that might
further upset the other man. He ate almost the whole meal before the
need to sleep overcame him. Remus helped ease him into a comfortable
position, placing pillows around to support his legs and stomach.
Electra helped, pulling up the light blanket over his shoulders,
pushing the edges in place with her nose.

"There now, you just get some sleep," Albus stroked Snape's clean
locks. "Remus will set with you till I return."

"Albus?" He asked sleepily.

"Hush child. Rest." Dumbledore whispered a small spell, sending the
younger man into a dream free slumber.

Snape slept all the way through morning, not even showing signs of
stirring till around lunchtime.

The first sight to greet his eyes was the still figure of Hagrid
snoring away in a chair transfigured to accomidate his large frame.

His shifting around alerted the bed's other occupant.

Electra woke from her nap to see her master awake. The Corgi hopped up,
swarming up into Severus' arms to give him a proper greeting. He
couldn't help laughing as Electra wriggled and licked his face and
hands.

Hagrid awoke with a snort. "Huh? Professor Snape! Yer awake!!" The
giant man beamed a wide smile. "We've all bin' right worried abou'
yeh."

Calming Electra down Snape looked on as Hagrid busied himself about the
room, calling on the house elves to bring up some tea and later
breakfast, sending word to Remus and Poppy via floo powder that the
Professor was awake. When the tea arrived he took the tray from the
elf. With more finess than one would expect from hands so big Hagrid
served him tea.

"The Headmaster's run ter the Ministry, Fudge's up in a row abou'
sommat. Dunno when he'll be back," the big man pulled his chair closer,
settling down again with an oversized cup of steaming tea for himself.

"How that man manages to hold his position is quite beyond me." Snape
blew on his tea.

"Right myst'ry that." Hagrid agreed. "Gotta have sum pull, the great
prune."

"How long have I slept?" He noticed the sun streaming through the gap
in the curtains.

"Abou' 10 hours. Poppy said fer us to let yeh sleep."

"That long?" No wonder his stomach, as well as various other portions
of his body, were beginning to protest. ( Well, first things first.)
Setting his cup aside Severus pulled away the blankets covering him.

"Here now! Whatta yeh doin'?" Hagrid rose, restraining the smaller man
easily, preventing him from rising. "No gettin' outta bed, yeh'll be
catchin' a cold!"

"Hagrid, I need to go to the bathroom. Unless of course you wish for me
to soil the sheets?"

The big man bellowed one of his great laughs and offered the smaller
wizard support to the bathroom where he waited outside till Snape
finished his business. As they were making there way back to the bed
Severus noticed a rather large odd shape setting in the center of the
room covered with an old blanket.

"And what pray tell is that monstrosity over there?"

"Ah..erm..nothin'."

Severus eyed the half giant warily, it was unusual for Hagrid to
attempt to lie or misdirect. The man was absolutely lousy at it. "If
that is so then it is quite a large nothing."

"Aw Professor. It's jus' a gift fer yeh babies." Large fingers twitched
nervously. "I missed yeh shower an' thought I'd make up fer it. Minerva
told me no un got 'em little tykes summat ter sleep in..."

That was true. Amidst all the shower presents there hadn't been a
cradle or crib, a vital object to a baby. It left him to wondering if
the others already knew of Hagrid's present and avoided buying one.

"On that matter you've hit on an embarrassing truth." He sighed and
took another look at Hagrid's gift. "Am I allowed to open this package
of yours? Or is there some sort of baby ritual I have to follow first."

" Yeh mean yeh want to..?"

Severus bit back the caustic reply that came unbidden to mind. "I
wouldn't ask if I didn't."

Hagrid was only too happy to oblidge. He picked up the gift and placed
it within easy reach of the man setting on the bed. Severus carefully
pulled away the blanket and gasped.

Beneath that worn old rag sat one of the most splendidly crafted baby
cradles Severus had ever laid eyes on. Not that he'd seen many over his
lifetime but those he had seen weren't nearly as finely built.

"Made it meself," Hagrid pulled himself up proudly. "Those little tykes
need a good place te sleep together. Not right te split 'em up, them
being twins an' all."

Long fingers trailed across the fine mahogony finish, feeling the
strong wood beneath, and the enchantments laid deep into the grain.
Spells to protect the babies, to shield them from loud noises, to
prevent them from scrambling out when they grew older, to rock when
cracky little ones needed soothing. Severus wondered if Hagrid himself
had laid the spells or asked for someone to assist in that area.
Carvings decorated on the headboard area. A majestic lion and great
serpent lay together in harmony, crafted in great detail, every scale
and hair could be easily counted. The whole thing could easily
accommidate two newborn babies right up to the age of two.

"I'm sorry, it's not such a fine thin' as yeh probably had..."

"No, no, it's beautiful," Snape felt himself strangely moved by the
groundskeeper's gift. "Thank you."

Hargid was really such a sweet man....

"Crikey! Yeh like it? Oh-hey! Are yeh cryin' Professor?" Out came a
long white hanky from one of the multitude of pockets in Hagrid's coat
which he used to dab away the unexpected tears which were now falling
one right after another from the man's black eyes.

"What's going on here Hagrid?" Remus followed the nurse over to the
bed. "What's got him upset?"

"Don't know, I jus' gave 'im a present. Made it meself."

"Oh, I understand." The old nurse chuckled.

"Well I wish someone would enlighten me." Severus sniffed, attempting
to regain some measure of control.

"Mood swings Severus. Hormone-driven changes to your emotional state."
She conjured up a cool cloth with which to wipe his face. "This is
natural."

"For others perhaps, but not for me." This was intolerable! Here he
was, a grown man, bawling his eyes out like some five year old!

"Right now Severus this is natural for you."

"Great, just bloody wonderful!" Now he really was upset.

While Hagrid wrung his hands and worried that he'd done something wrong
Remus climbed into the bed and gathered Severus into his arms. A bit of
careful prodding got him into the proper position. Snape now lay in the
security of Lupin's arms, one hand stroking his hair while the other
rubbed slow soothing circles on his back. He hummed an old tune, one
Remus knew Severus liked. Slowly Snape came down from his latest mood.

"You're enjoying this," he whispered to the werewolf. "Yeah," Remus
breathed his answer into that fine black hair. "I've always wanted to
be your friend Sev, wanted to be close to you."

"Just don't get too comfy, this is just a temporary thing. When I get
back to normal it'll be hands off."

"Okay Sev," Remus bit the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing.
Severus wasn't thinking too clearly right now if he thought matters
between them would return to what it was before. But he wasn't going to
argue about it right now. No sense in upsetting the man again. Later
after the twins were born they could discuss their friendship. Right
now Remus just laid back against the pillows and soaked up this
contented feeling that welled from deep inside.
